Golden Flower Physics, Pt. 2: Fractal-Holographic Principles in the Secret of the Golden Flower

This article is a continuation of my attempt at syncretism in light of the Daoist mysticism and meditative techniques espoused in the Secret of the Golden Flower and other texts. This project seeks to compare Chinese cosmological and ontological concepts with those found in contemporary fringe science topics – most interestingly the fractal-holographic and fluid electrodynamic properties of Nature.

“The light is neither inside nor outside the self. Mountains, rivers, sun, moon, and the whole earth are all this light, so it is not only in the self. All the operations of intelligence, knowledge, and wisdom are also this light, so it is not outside the self. The light of heaven and earth fills the universe; the light of one individual also naturally extends through the heavens and covers the earth. Therefore once you turn the light around, everything in the world is turned around.” – Taiyi Jinhua Zongzhi, 3.10, Cleary

By “light” the SOTGF means the light of pure consciousness. This implies an underpinning assumption of the primacy of consciousness, meaning the belief that consciousness is more fundamental to Nature than physical objects, i.e. atomic matter. Dean Radin highlights this as an intrinsic difference between the current, physicalist paradigm of science and the coming paradigm (information-energetic). He also notes that quantum systems models have yet to account for the effect of psi – in other words, we still don’t know how psi happens but we are looking. I would contend the answers are out there, waiting to be consolidated (e.g. Holofractal sub-quantum informatics, or something).

We also see that light is the monad or prima materia in this case. There is a single substance in the ontology and it is light. However, logically, where there is light there must be somewhere for it to shine. Therefore, darkness is both implied and explicitly talked about in the text. “Darkness returning to darkness, by a coming together of kind” is the process in which the po (lower soul, physical) partakes after death. The po “suffers in life” and “looks toward death”. The book says “this is what consciousness is”. By consciousness in this case, I believe them to be referring to perhaps the echo chamber of the Void – implying that in some way both light (pure consciousness) and darkness (physical basis of consciousness) are both “consciousness”. Seeing the light is still the object of the practice and this light is the fundamental substance of the world.

The light of one individual spreading throughout the whole world can be taken as more than a remarkable testament to our personal power, but a hint at the known implication of Maxwellian field-theory that all fields extend into infinity, both mathematically and in consideration of thought experiments like the Butterfly effect.

“Once you turn the light around, everything in world is turned around” – in exactly the same way that the information stored in one proton is shared by almost all other protons in the universe. Every movement of every particle in the universe effects the holistic information-state of the entire universe. The staggering implication is that by observing the nature of one’s own consciousness, one is affecting the entire physical universe as well.

“Turning the light around is not turning around the light of one body, but turning around the very energy of Creation.” – 3.5

“If each point contains the whole, then each point has all the information.” – Nassim Haramein, physicist

“The words focus on the center are most sublime. The center is omnipresent; the whole universe is within it. This indicates the mechanism of Creation; you focus on this to enter the gate, that is all. To focus means to focus on this as a hint, not to become rigidly fixated. The meaning of the word focus has life to it; it is very subtle.” – 3.12

The last two sentences have more to do with praxis, but there is ontological information to be gleaned from this passage. The omnipresent center that contains the universe is something that is experienced in meditation, but there may be cosmological reasons for this being built into the structure of reality.

I suppose part of the assertion implicit in this entire intellectual endeavor is there is novel and useful information to be gleaned from the practice of turning consciousness in on itself or treating consciousness as it’s own object. “Consciousness is always consciousness of something” is a trope in the Western philosophy of mind. What kind of consciousness? This is a matter of shishen (perceiving spirit) vs. yuanshen (original spirit). Yuanshen correlates with light and with the yang energy of the hun (ethereal soul/higher soul) which is to “overcome” the yin energy of the po (corporeal soul/lower soul).

The next statement is a kind of holofractal statement in itself – that the information dynamics of the universe itself actually implies the mechanism by which it came into being in the first place. The nature of the thing is tautologous and self-evident – so recursive and self-referential in nature as to escape language. “You focus on this to enter the gate, that is all.” To focus on this is to gently and patiently nurse within oneself the notion that consciousness is not only fundamental to the structure and function of reality, but that it is so homologous and self-similar in nature as to escape explanation as an actual matter of fact. The ineffability is built into the ontology – it is not a failure of semantics or science or instrumentation.

Energy Ontology: Applied and Theoretical

To what extent is energywork a simple endeavor, and available to everyone?

The hands (and space in general), rather than being points of “emission”, “projection”, “emanation”, etc., are placeholders for the intentional focus of consciousness, i.e. attention. The only thing emanating is the expression of a singular, universal reality according to our perception of space-time – flow.

God emanates. Humans take part. This is why in energywork we say, “it’s not you”.

Whenever you move you are entraining the superfluid Ether. Thought is a sort of movement, even insofar as our understanding of “thought” in the cognitive sense requires a brain with neurons that create differentials in charge and dictate the flow of electrons (not to say that thought, broadly speaking, exists only inside one’s brain). Therefore, when you think you also entrain the superfluid Ether. They are called brainwaves, after all.

Why would there be so many swimming-like movements in qigong? It’s because you are swimming.

Be this a metaphor or a statement of fact, how are we actually swimming if our experience only matches that of “swimming” when we are either suspended in a body of water or, in some important cases, experiencing the flow of energywork or qigong?

“Life… [has] three main constitutional elements: a) a highly complex (bio)chemistry – material level, b) a complex coherent regime as introduced by Frohlich and later elaborated by Giudice et al. – (bio)energy level, and c) active information working on both previous levels and integrating them into one organized functioning whole – trans-material informational level.” – Igor Jerman

Now for a little categorical syncretism:

a. JingEssence (Physical, Matter) Biochemistry – Polar molecules – Earth
b. ShenSpirit (Spiritual, Ether) – Bioenergy – Coherent regimes – Heaven
c. QiBreath (Mental, Thought) – Active information – Organizational function – Man

This quantum biological ontology is a recapitulation of the Sanbao (Three Treasures) in Daoist metaphysics and the ubiquitous triplicate ontology found in many systems of thought (Christian, Kabbalistic, Hellenistic, Vedic, Polynesian, etc.).


In this sense Qi is a Mercurial force, acting as intermediary between Heaven and Earth. In Daoist Alchemy, yi is associated with the “go-between” (mei), given it’s correspondence with the Earth phase (the phase between seasons) and with the intentional aspect of the Spleen. Qi and the function of the Spleen are intricately tied in Chinese Medicine.

With this emphasis on the relationship-oriented function of qi, it’s role in the Four Stages of the Zhong-Lu tradition of Daoist Alchemy must also be noted. The practitioner is tasked with transmuting essence into breath, breath into spirit, and spirit into oneness. Qi is literally the intermediary between these two domains of the human being, before being enfolded into the implicate order of the Dao. Qi exists between the informational electrodynamics of the quantum vacuum and the macromolecular world of biochemistry.

According to Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallee, the concept of qi in Chinese culture has its roots as far back as the 14th century BC in the naturalistic notion of wind (feng). The wind was believed to give life to the insects and plants in the Spring. It is an invisible force which compels something to move. As the notion of qi began to develop in Chinese culture, it was first seen as an influence penetrating Earth from Heaven (as in the six qi). It was seen as the basis of yin and yang and ultimately, the basis of reality itself. It was eventually understood as what lies behind form and simultaneously the relationship between forms.

All these notions share something in common with the Ether’s relationship to the physical world and with our understanding of the electrodynamics of quantum biology.

Ether is an invisible force which gives both form and function through its physical expression. It is the source of the quantum coherence which unifies the informational structure of space-time. The Ether is superfluid, meaning that it’s movements are self-coherent across unimaginable levels of scale (this would not be hard to do given 10^93gm/cm^3 of energy).

In the sense of qi being a relationship, the notion of coherence and the informational density (i.e. level of connectedness) within space adequately reflect this. The only definition any materialistic psychobiologist has for consciousness is essentially the coherence of the firing of neurons. Call it brainwave entrainment. Call it neural synchrony. It is information sharing between Jing and Shen between the Ethereal and the material – and one of the products of this information sharing is the biological neural networks we call nervous systems.

Somehow these biological neural networks are able to grant sensation, perception, and even what we perceive as choice in the case of human consciousness – due to the fact that microscopic biochemical capacitors in your brain are doing the same dance. They are resonating. Contemporary psychobiological understanding (whatever that means) seems to neglect the remarkably fundamental impact of electromagnetism on the nervous system, even down to the inevitable electromagnetic pulse created by each action potential of the 10^11 (one hundred billion) neurons in the brain. Remember, all fields extend into infinity.

What an unimaginably complex field it must be that “generates” the unity of consciousness! Pure chaos! Consciousness must be an illusion! The patch isn’t really red! It just looks like it! …said the philosopher.

The contention here is a holonomic brain theory underpinned by an ontology of morphic resonance through a unified spacememory network.

The patch is in fact red and consciousness is realer than real – it is all there is.

As hinted here, it is consciousness itself which interacts with matter to generate psychic and synchronistic phenomena. To qualify this further, it is human consciousness interacting with what is fundamentally a form of proto-consciousness inherent in space (the Ether). The intentional focus of consciousness (attention) allows the information density of space-time to perform a sort of fractal implosion through it’s self-same relationship. You hold your hands out, you feel the qi, and little by little or lots by lots – you are healed and so are those around you. You have brought greater consciousness into being simply by holding space. This is the non-binary principle of mind-matter coherence cultivationconsciousness through consciousness.

Just keep swimming.

The Importance of Spirituality in Healing

In my last article, I laid the foundation for some ideas regarding our psychospiritual interaction with the Dao. What has always been understood in all cultures under mystical pretense is now the purview of a unified physics, one that – if appreciated with an appropriate sense of wonder and an open heart – affirms for us the limitless spiritual power that is built into the reality in which we live. A power in which we play an important part.

Who would you rather be: a person stuck on an island with or without the power of prayer? Some might say, “prayer is delusion and I’d rather die without false hope.” These people simply have yet to feel it.

For those of us that do – where does this power come from?  The obvious and easy answer is God. It’s one that need suffice for us, ultimately. But while we’ve got time and the brains to do it, let us explore some ideas.

This article is not intended as an explanation of the power of God – rather it is a brisk walk through theology, metaphysics, and a study of consciousness. For our purposes, recognizing the influence of a higher power in one’s life is spirituality. Prayer is the act of making an appeal to that power. In this respect, energywork can easily be regarded as a form of prayer. The highest form of energywork is that in which the practitioner sees him or herself as a “hollow tube”. “It’s not you”, we often tell ourselves; it is the Source Qi (yuan qi) of the universe. The act of performing energywork is not the release of stored energy like a battery (i.e., capacitance) – it is simply allowing the right energy to flow (i.e., conductance).

At the quantum level, the glue that holds matter together is the coherence between the waves that governs its behavior. As our understanding of this phenomenon deepens, we realize that the effects of coherence are not just obscure occurrences in vacuum chambers with entangled particles – coherence is everywhere, all the time. In fact, quantum biology tells us that extremely high-level coherence is what keeps organisms together both at the cellular level and the level of the whole organism.

All cell membranes exist because the waves which stand on their surface are musical – literally; in phase.” – Dan Winter, Physicist

Quantum biology also tells us that the formation of life is a natural product of the interaction of water and light with the quantum information coherence network of the Planck scale of space. Light and water are literally extracting energy and information from the vacuum in a way that negates entropy and gives rise to organisms that feed, grow, and reproduce. The miracle of life is nothing short of a miracle, even when given a physical explanation.*

This coherence can happen between structures at different levels of scale. This encompasses interactions between the organization of mind and matter itself. In fact, the unimaginably complex interplay of information and energy at the Etheric (quantum vacuum) level of space can be interpreted as a universal form of proto-consciousness. One that is everywhere, all the time, and is constantly exchanging information-energy with all matter and especially matter organized into life.

I’m certainly not making the claim here that God can be somehow reduced to the total information-state of the quantum vacuum – but I am saying they are related. What’s being presented here is a theology in which God is both immanent and transcendent, both ineffable and interactive. How fortunate are we to have a spirituality that is so dynamic and so full of life?!

Being alive means that you are in some way more in touch with this energy than an inanimate object. You have a bio-scale supercomputer of quantum coherence following you around (your mind), in which you can direct your attention and cognitive processing power. Take into consideration the role of feedback in this process. If biogenesis results from feedback between the quantum electrodynamic interaction of water and light with the information of the quantum foam, then what are the possibilities of the quantum electrodynamic relationship between one’s mind and one’s conception of a higher power.

Spontaneous and miraculous healing occurs everyday, all over the planet. Could it be that through the power of our spirituality we are tapping into the high-level coherence of the Ether and thereby bringing our own bodies into resonance with that highly ordered field?

“Coherence is health.”
